Downtown Grand Forks suffered extensive damage from flood and fire. The downtown fire destroyed two blocks. Buildings not destroyed by fire had 3 or 4 feet of water on the first floor. Cleanup of downtown buildings was still underway in July, 1997. Most downtown businesses were either closed, or had moved to temporary quarters in other parts of Grand Forks.
